Movement Is a Mark
at THE GARAGE ART CENTER, Queens, New York, May 30, 2021

ARTIST’S STATEMENT: Due to the pandemic, we needed to keep the audience small, so we did two performances, one right after the other. That set up a situation where I made two big paintings in just a few hours - something I’d never done before. In the second performance, something unexpected happened. I’d gone into the zone and in ways, lost control. At one point, I thought maybe I was done, took off my painting shirt, but then decided to go back in - all of which was quiet but incredibly exciting. The simplicity of making decisions, of making my marks, was a kind of drama in and of itself. Stumbling and then bringing the painting back has opened up new possibilities.
