“In this film, artist Katy Martin captured Johns collaborating with master Japanese silkscreen printers Hiroshi Kawanishi, Kenjiro Nonaka, and Takeshi Shimada on several prints including Usuyuki at Simca Print Artists, Inc. Kawanishi, the studio’s founder, moved the print operation from Tokyo to New York in 1971. It was in this New York workshop that Johns and Kawanishi worked together on twenty-two intricate screen print editions, many of them using more than ten different screens to create the final image.
Martin’s interview with Johns functions as a sort of soundtrack to the film, transforming it into a meditation on art and craft.”
