IN THE KEY OF CH'I
2015, video, 29 minutes, SILENT
by Katy Martin
with camera by Bill Brand
Conceived for The Vision Festival 20, this work premiered during a live concert by Marilyn Crispell and Gerry Hemingway. As an on-stage projection, the piece in its original form was meant as a visual complement to the music.
As a silent film, In the Key of Ch'i draws on minimalist ideas from the 1970s, using repetition and a slow, dreamy pace to draw - but not capture - the viewers' attention, creating a kind of subjective space.
